My future job

I am not sure about what is the job that I want to do in future. I'm studying Chemistry and Pharmacy, and pharmacist has several job options; however, two of these options attract me so much (and both are indoor jobs).

One of these options is work as researcher in a university. In Chile, researchers have to research, teach some related courses, publish papers, and go to conferences, among other things. This job implies laboratory work, and that is something I enjoy a lot. Probably I need to get a master's degree or/and a PhD.

I think that in this job I would travel a lot, knowing new places; therefore, I would have to learn other languages.

The salary of a researcher is variable, according to the type of research, the post in the research, how much funds have available, etc.

The other alternative is work in Pharmaceutical Industry. In this job, I would be chief, in production area or quality analysis area. I would be in charge of the performance of my employees, supervising that all works properly.

The salary of a pharmacist that works in Industry is usually good. Besides, work schedules are fixed; therefore I could have a quiet and organized life. Probably I would not travel a lot…

Postgraduate studies

One of my life goals is to live  out of Chile in future, in some country where quality of life is considerately better. It's even better if this country have a real welfare society. And, if is possible, I would like to study a PhD degree in this country. In particular, I really am attracted to University of Toronto’s Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program, in Biomolecular Pharmaceutical Sciences. This PhD program has many aspects that interest me. For example, you can specialize in biopharmaceuticals study, an up to date subject in the rest of the world, but not much developed in Chile. Decisions

When I graduated from high school, I started to study Electrical Civil Engineering. As I had previously studied Telecommunications in a technical school, my first option was to study Engineering, in spite of not knowing the labor field. Being in that career I realized that it was not what I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. In spite of loving the study of mathematics and finding fascinating the courses I could study, the possibilities of work I would have once my studies were completed were not to my liking. After much thought, especially considering the time I would lose, I decided to leave Electrical Engineering career and think better about what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. After some time, I realized that actually the dream of my life always was to be a scientist. Changes to my study program

Hi everyone! This is our last blog session, so I want to take this opportunity to say goodbye. It has been a pleasure to read your posts and comments. The career of Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals in this university has had many changes, principally with study program changes. Like all change, there are modifications that mean important advances in the professional development of the students, while another changes, I think, are a setback. One of the things I didn’t like about study program changes is the omission of teacher Hernan Vergara’s subjects.   Teacher Vergara’s subjects (who’s actually retired), promoted the basic knowledge of our profession in the first career years. Matters as concepts of medicines, their classification and effects, therapies and related laws are basic knowledge that all students must to know.
